Pattern & Porcelain

Prop stylist Carla Gonzalez-Hart and photographer Christopher Testani used a couple of my fabrics in their editorial pairing dinnerware with work by contemporary textile designers. So nice!

blue cat dishes

Here are the dishes I made based on my drawings from a couple posts ago. I also made little figurine versions that I'm waiting to come out of the kiln. You can buy one of these guys, and other ceramic pieces, in my shop here.

blue cats and more ceramics

Nothing you haven't seen before here. These are some sketches for cat-shaped dishes I'm thinking of making in ceramics. I've figured out another glazing technique that works well for the painted detail I'm after with a delft-like blue wash over a milky white glaze. Here's a test tile I made in this method:

It was pretty exciting to have something that's high fired come out well after weeks of failed attempts. All the successful pieces I've been making are low fired, so it's easier to paint detail, as glazes and oxides tend to run or react unexpectedly when the kiln is super hot. But this is working! The feel of the ceramic after it's high fired is also so satisfying, the clay is stronger and has a nice "tink!" when you tap it.

Black Cat iPhone cases for 4/4S & 5 now in my shop. Cheaper than Society6 and directly from me :)

**black cat signature iphone case**

I was desperately hoping for like 2 years that everyone would forget about the black cat pattern, because I do a ton of other things and everyone always wants to talk about the cats, but now I'm just embracing it as my thing. If I ever accidentally become a real fashion designer, there will probably be one thing every season with this print.

I set up a little shop on Society6 primarily to sell iPhone cases and immediately ordered this one for myself. And it's great! It's a lot thinner and sleeker than my old case, and the print quality is really nice. I've listed a dozen different patterns in the Society6 shop, and if you see pattern you want as a case that isn't there now, just let me know and I can put it up!

Have you met Baby Moses? He's a loving and needy little thing who sits on my shoulders while I work.

pet portrait!

My friend Kaitie recently commissioned me to do a couple pet portraits, and here is one of her beautiful cat Jolene. My mom used to run her own pet portrait business, Blue Dog Pink Kitty, before I was born, so I tried to channel a little bit of that. Her's was, like, really serious though: she would drive great distances to meet and photograph the pets and their owners before doing large, detailed watercolors.

swanson

This is Swanson, he's a kitty, he is named for Ron Swanson. He lived with me for a week or so and made me very sick with allergies but now he's gone and I kind of miss him.

kitty cat

New kitty shirts up in the shop! 2010 was a good year for cats, but they're going to be huge in 2011. Check out American Apparel's new dress with textiles illustrated by Dov's Dad, Morris Charney, in the late 60s -- the best one is the cat one.

Update on the cats:
You can buy the dress now.

I even made this into a collab with Chelsey Pettyjohn without even asking her!

The dress comes with a zine of me & Chelsey's various cat drawings and paintings.

OMG CAT PRINT DRESS.
Gotta work out some kinks and then this will be for sale.
It's so insanely hand done (each cat head is block printed individually) that if you want something custom with this print just email me.
(I believe in Collaborative Consumption so I'm open to trade or some sort of alternate payment)
Also check out the pillows in the background I made using lily print scraps from Mary Meyer Spring '11!!!!! I pretended like I had plans last night so I could stay in and get crafty.
A little faces print is available too. The cat heads have no faces but the human faces have no heads. It's weird.
