cool girls

we went to see drowners this weekend at mercury lounge and also saw a cool girl band called bad girlfriend who made me want to draw some cool band girls. I'm never going to be in a band but if I was I'd probably write a song called feelings too.

I'll start with Angella's beautiful apartment in Golden Hill, San Diego because it's as good a place as any to start and I was so happy to see her and Lyra, and Lyra slept at my feet and I was so happy.
We went up to L.A. shortly after, here are a couple from my booth.
Driving up the coast to San Francisco the next week: a stop to look at elephant seals, various roadside views including the bluest blues in Big Sur.
I stayed at Delaney's house in West Oakland. I liked it, it had Bushwick vibes. Junior is a good cat. We did stick n pokes. We had fun.
I met up with Julia Kostreva for a day and we went around Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. These are from the Flower Conservatory and a butterfly exhibit there.
Last night in Oakland drinks with Kaye. We took two photos and we both don't look awful in this one.
And a couple from the drive back. You're all right, California.

OUI & Me

I've been a big fan of Angela Hodgkinson's line of ceramic candles, OUI, for a long time, and when she emailed me and asked if I wanted to work together on a special collection of hand-painted candles I was thrilled. In April she shipped me 12 blank, bisqued teacups, and I painted them and shipped them back to her in Oklahoma City. Shortly after I sent off the box the devastating tornadoes struck. Angela and I are both devoted cat moms (I'm huge fans of Hazel and Jacques on her Instagram), and we decided to give all proceeds from the sale of this collection to the Central Oklahoma Humane Society for their work rescuing, saving, housing, and placing pets during and since the devastating May tornadoes.

Here's a peek at some new products and patterns that are coming to the shop next month. It was so much fun taking these photos with some great girls recently. And really could Gillian and Gaby be more beautiful?! Ugh.

just some things I drew the other day when it was too hot to work in the studio. I painted these with an eyebrow brush while sitting on my bedroom floor, I had forgotten to bring a real brush home. thinking of summer, packing for California, and new clothes I want to buy. I don't really want to go, I'm going to miss Moses too much.

In My Room

"In My Room" is a one night group show put on by some of my best friends from school, Rachel, Monica, and John. Since we graduated, they've been organizing group shows every chance they can, and this is the first one I've had the opportunity to be in & am around to attend. It will be a fun night with a lot of my favorite people, so stop by if you can make it to Park Slope! On top is the thing I made, I don't really know if I like it but art (without Photoshop) is hard.

Renegade Prep

My pal Kaye Blegvad (of Datter Industries jewelry fame) emailed me a couple months ago to ask if I'd like to take an epic California trip in July, make a ton of money, and tax deduct the whole thing. I immediately said yes, of course, and now I'm sort of regretting it (but feeling a lot of anxious excitement too). So, I'll be at Renegade Craft Fair in Los Angeles on July 20-21 and San Francisco on July 27-28. Kaye and I are sharing a booth, so stop by and say hi (and maybe buy something because I've gone completely broke preparing for this)!

I'm spending a lot of time gazing up at my Napkin pom banner for inspiration. I've never make this much product before, everything in my shop is made to order or in very small runs, and my anxiety (and workload) is insane right now. Have any of you done Renegade before? Have any advice? I need it!

blue cat dishes

Here are the dishes I made based on my drawings from a couple posts ago. I also made little figurine versions that I'm waiting to come out of the kiln. You can buy one of these guys, and other ceramic pieces, in my shop here.

blue cats and more ceramics

Nothing you haven't seen before here. These are some sketches for cat-shaped dishes I'm thinking of making in ceramics. I've figured out another glazing technique that works well for the painted detail I'm after with a delft-like blue wash over a milky white glaze. Here's a test tile I made in this method:

It was pretty exciting to have something that's high fired come out well after weeks of failed attempts. All the successful pieces I've been making are low fired, so it's easier to paint detail, as glazes and oxides tend to run or react unexpectedly when the kiln is super hot. But this is working! The feel of the ceramic after it's high fired is also so satisfying, the clay is stronger and has a nice "tink!" when you tap it.

Boogie, Pam, and Truffle

Boogie, Pam, and Truffle are my friend Courtney's dogs. She runs a handmade shop called Napkin and sent me one of her amazing pom banners so I made her these mini ceramic figures of her dogs.

More on my pom banner: it says RICH BITCH, and hangs above my desk to help me stay motivated even when I'm making cat dress after cat dress to pay my overpriced Bushwick rent. I moved into a new studio recently, and I'll post photos soon when it's all set up.

summertime, almost.

It's raining a lot so I'm drawing summer things and thinking about my California trip in July. Sidenote- I think I've given up on my tumblr, and I'm planning on updating this blog more. I really wanted to post daily drawings...and that lasted for a few weeks...and now I feel like I haven't made anything in 2 months. But I have! So more posts soon.
