pt 2

Every year is better than the previous and this has been the best year. I've done one thousand things and I'm not afraid of anything and I've learned that the best days are usually the ones that I have a tofu sandwich for lunch and get really excited about at least one thing I'm working on or anticipating. I'm off to California tomorrow, but we'll be in touch.

I took on a challenge: start a sketchbook using only ink. No pencils allowed!!

It started off OK.

Then it got a little weird.

mycology

I thought of about 10 different creative titles for this post but I'm going to keep it scientific. Mycology is the study of fungi, and I am obsessed with Beatrix Potter.

Each tank is hand sewn and hand printed with waterbased ink. They're also available in a cropped version and in a light blue-gray color. (If you're interested in buying one & seeing the other style/color just email me of course.)

Each tank comes with a zine that identifies every fungi in the print.

Many thanks to Rachel Friedman, my master screenprinting partner who is the best and made this possible. Many doubted my fungi-printing ability but she believed in me. You should buy her t-shirt.

Also, big thanks to Furni who featured the little drawings and funny kids I did in their Holiday Matinee notebook.

Come to our exhibition with Andre!

Or don't come, but Taylor you should come.

Update on the shirts: My personal stock is sold out, but Rachel has some left. They are now being sold exclusively at Kimski Makes in Los Angeles, so stop by 369 E 2nd St if you want to/are in the area. Yes I'm holding an apple core which is pretty representative of my life overall.

Some more things.

Dylan & Holiday Matinee sent me over this nice little notebook which I filled up between the evening of April 26 and the evening of April 27. I got some real weirdo drawings out of it. Thanks Dave Brown!

My life right now is fungi, whales, coloring books, zines forever, John James Audubon and Beatrix Potter, tofu sandwiches and dreaming of California and unconfined space.

"If blindness belongs to old age, it also belongs to infancy. We cannot remember seeing as infants, and so in a sense we all began blind and remained that way for several years. How did I see as an infant, and what did I see? One of the reasons I cannot answer those questions is that memory is necessary for vision. Everything from the first few years of my life is lost to me, partly because I was not old enough to remember seeing, to think of seeing while it was happening. In the most elementary way, seeing and memory go together, and the blindness of my infancy was a time when sight and memory were not yet linked. . . This infantile blindness is not physical blindness, but it is more than just a metaphor. If I have no visual memory whatsoever from those first few years, in what sense was I not blind?"
From The Object Stares Back: On the Nature of Seeing by James Elkins.

Seeing, interpreting, drawing, remembering. What do you see and what kind of line does it turn into and what does it mean much later? I've had sketchbooks since the middle of high school that link drawings to the most specific memories. A drawing of a cup of tea--one of dozens--may mean it was 5 pm on New Year's Eve in 2006 with Ryan Larry at Pannikin and it was raining.

Hey what's up just hangin out with my new best friend Puss in apartment 15 AKA STUDIO 15.

What did we do today, well we got Puss dressed up to go out in the snow

and then we cut all of Yoon's hair off and scanned it.

Yoon and I were very satisfied with our success at being conceptual artists and Puss was just happy being a kitty cat so we all made dinner and went back to our illustration/communication design/sitting on my shelf (me/Yoon/Puss).
